Early Career Reviewer Workshop in Bern
This workshop offers a valuable opportunity for early career researchers to deepen their understanding of the scientific publication process, the objectives of peer review and the responsibility of reviewers. Throughout the workshop, participants will gain practical insights on how to approach, plan and organise their first peer review. In collaboration with the journal Psychological Science, we will work with real manuscripts to further develop the participants’ skills in writing peer review reports. Participants will be guided by senior researchers with extensive peer review expertise.
Our ECReviewer workshop and accompanying guide are specifically designed to address the statistical components of a manuscript. Additionally, the workshop will highlight ways to incorporate open and responsible research practices into the peer review process.
Workshop content
Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to engage in self-study of the ECReviewer guide and read the manuscript they will be assigned to a week before the workshop. The in-person workshop will begin with an interactive discussion/lecture on the “theory of peer review”. Participants will be able to ask all their questions and hear from the experiences of senior researchers. The second part is hands-on, and participants will perform a joint review of the assigned manuscript with other participants. Each group will be guided by one senior researcher.
Who should attend?
PhD students and early postdocs from empirical fields with limited experience in peer review. The manuscripts used for peer review will be from the field of Psychology.
